Replace Lost or Stolen Title in Texas

How to replace your lost title in Texas

A duplicate title may be issued if the original title has been lost, stolen, or destroyed. Since a vehicle cannot be bought or sold without a title, it is important that owners obtain a replacement as soon as possible.

Documents Required for a Replacement Title:

  1. Application for a Certified Copy of a Texas Certificate of Title
Indicate on this form that you are applying for a replacement title.
  2. Lien Holder Form
If the original title shows a lien holder, they must also complete a form for a new title.
  3. Power of Attorney
A POA is only needed if you cannot fill out the application yourself. The person who signs for you must provide copies of both yours and his photo IDs.

Fees:

A $2 duplicate title fee applies if you are mailing the form. If you wish to apply in person, the fee is $5.45. Checks, cashier checks, and money orders are acceptable, and should be made out to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Submissions

You may mail the application or submit it in person to your local Vehicle Titles and Registration Regional Offices. Make sure you include the appropriate fees.
