How to replace your lost title in Washington DC


You have the option to apply for a duplicate title if your original was stolen or lost. You must have a title if you are buying or selling a vehicle. Follow the steps below to replace your lost title in the District of Colombia.

  • Provide proper ID such as DC driver's license, DC learner's permit or DC identification card. If you are applying by mail include a copy of the same for each owner. For applicants who are not owners of the vehicle should provide a Vehicle Power of Attorney, copy of the owner's identification and copy of the applicant's identification.
  • You will need vehicle identification this can be your Vehicle Renewal Notice, Vehicle Registration, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), DC Title Number or Vehicle Tag Number.
  • If you have a lienholder on your title and you want to apply for a duplicate title in your name since you have paid off the lien, you must include the following documents:

    • A letter stating that you paid off the lien from the financing company.
    • Agreement of loan stamped as "paid" by the financial company and certified by an authorized party.
    • Get the stamp on the title showing the lien release from the financing company.


  • Provide identification when replacing an existing title and/or requesting a name or address change on the title.
  • If the VIN is incorrect on the title and you need to change it you must send in a VIN correction from the District's inspection station or an out-of-state vehicle agency's VIN correction letter on its letterhead.
  • Make sure to attach the original title to the application if it was damaged.
