How to get a new and transfer title in Utah

The state of Utah issues certificates of title to any vehicle legally owned by a citizen of this state. Whenever an individual buys a new vehicle, they must also apply for a title. In the event of a vehicle being given as a gift, or sold for profit, a title transfer must be completed. When a vehicle owner dies, a similar type of transfer is necessary.

Title for a New Vehicle:

Usually, the dealer that sold you your vehicle will take care of transferring the title into your name. If you would rather handle this step yourself, refer to the Vehicle Titles page and the How to Register Your Vehicle in Utah document on the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website.

Transfer of Title on Used Vehicles

When you buy a used vehicle, or someone gives you one as a gift, you must transfer the title into your name. Gather together the following paperwork, and submit this, along with the correct fees, to your local DMV facility:

  1. Current Title
The seller/donor must fill out the part that assigns the title to you. Also include the federal odometer disclosure on any vehicle less than ten years old. If not included on title, this information must be submitted in a separate document.
  2. Bill of Sale
Some titles have space to write the date of sale and price. If yours does not, you must have a bill of sale made out, signed by both owners, and notarized.
  3. Boat Registration Application
If the vehicle in question is a boat, this additional form is needed.
  4. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Inspection Certificate
This document is required only if the vehicle was formerly titled outside of Utah.
  5. Original or Copy of Vehicle's Method of Financing
If there are any liens or security agreements on the vehicle, this information must be provided.
  6. Proof of Current Liability Insurance
  7. Property Tax Receipt

Fees:

Include the following fees with the proper documents:

  • Title Fee: $6
  • Sales and Use Tax: Dependent on Purchase Price of Vehicle
To determine the exact amount due, contact your DMV office.

Transferring a Title After Death of Owner:

When a vehicle owner dies, the title is usually transferred to the heirs. However, there may be a different recipient indicated in the will. Fees and documents needed for this transfer are similar to other title transfers. Also figure out how the heirs have settled the estate. Sometimes they may be required to fill out a Survivorship Affidavit and show copies of the death certificate and will. A summarized content of the will, if notarized, will also be accepted.

If you have questions regarding a title transfer after the owner has died, contact your local DMV office.
