New Title and Title Transfers in Tennessee

How to get a new title in Tennessee

Getting a title is a document proving you legally own your vehicle. If you are buying a new vehicle you will need a title. If you are giving away or selling a new vehicle you must do a title transfer.

In most cases the dealership where you purchased your vehicle from will handle your title process. Click here if you wish to handle the process on your own.

To transfer a title you must get the following documents and submit them with the fees to your local County Clerks Office:

  • Have the title signed over to you. The title must have the federal odometer disclosure if the vehicle is less than ten years old. Get an odometer disclosure statement if the title doesn't have it and the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  • Get the manufacturer's statement of origin and the Invoice in case of buying a new vehicle.
  • Make sure to have the vehicle registration receipt from the seller.
  • Proof of identification and proof of residency.

Fees:

  • Pay the $10.50 title fee.
  • Pay the $24 registration fee.
  • Title transfer and local fees which depend on the county clerks office.
