New Title and Title Transfers in South Dakota

How to get a new title in South Dakota

Getting a title is a document that proves you legally own your vehicle in South Dakota. When you purchase a new car you must get a title. If you are giving away or selling a vehicle you must do a title transfer within 30 days.

In most cases the dealership where you bought your vehicle from will submit the required documents and fees. If you wish to handle the process on your own you may do so.

If you are doing a title trasfer get these documents and submit them with the fees to the local county treasurer's office:

  • Have the title signed over to you. The title must include the federal odometer disclosure if the vehicle is less than ten years old and damage disclosure if the vehicle is less than seven years old.
  • Click here to complete the application.
  • If the title doesn't have the date of sale and selling price you must get a completed bill of sale signed by the current and new owner.
  • Get the purchase order for price verification purposes if the vehicle was purchased from a dealer.
  • Get an odometer disclosure statement if the title does not include this information and the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  • Click here for the damage disclosure statement if the title doesn't have it.

Fees:

  • $5.00 title fee.
  • $5.00 lien fee.
  • $1.00 solid waste fee.
  • $4.00 mailing fee.
  • License plate fees based on vehicle weight and model year.
  • 3% excise tax on the vehicle's purchase price.
  • Wheel tax, if applicable in your county of residence.
