New Title and Title Transfers in Pennsylvania

How to get a new title in Pennsylvania

Getting a title is a document that proves you legally own your vehicle. When you purchase a new vehicle you must get a title. If you are giving away or selling a used vehicle you must do a title transfer.

In most cases the dealership where you bought your vehicle from will handle the title process. Click here if you wish to handle the process on your own.

If you need to transfer a title get the following documents and submit them with the appropriate fees to PennDOT:

  • Have the title signed over to you and notarized. The title must include the federal odometer disclosure if the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  • If there is no bill of sale or selling price you will need a completed bill of sale signed by the current owner and new owner and get it notarized.
  • Fill out and complete a vehicle sales and use tax return application.
  • If your emissions sticker is expired have your car inspected within 10 days of purchase.
  • Have an identification card and driver's license.
  • Proof of liability insurance.

Fees:

  • $22.50 title transfer fee.
  • $5 lien recording fee.
  • 6% sales tax.
