New Title and Title Transfers in New York

How to get a new title in New York

Getting a title will prove you legally own your vehicle in New York. When you purchase a new vehicle you must have a title. If you are giving away or selling a vehicle you must do a title transfer.

In most cases the dealership that sold you the car will handle the title process. You have the option to handle it on your own if you wish.

To transfer a title send in the following documents and submit them with the fees by mail or in person at the DMV office:

  • Have the title signed over to you and notarized. The title must include the federal odometer disclosure if the vehicle is less than nine years old.
  • Click here to complete the form.
  • If the title doesn't show the date of sale and selling price get a completed bill of sale signed by both current and new owner and get it notarized.
  • Click here for an odometer and damage disclosure statement if the title doesn't include this information and the vehicle is less than nine years old.
  • Click here to get a statement of transaction for sales tax form and get it completed by both the buyer and the seller that shows the vehicle purchase price.
  • A New York state insurance identification card.
  • Get the original or copy of the vehicle's financing statement or security agreement.
  • Proof of identity and date of birth.

Fees:

  • Title fee of $50.00.
