How to get a new title in Indiana

When you get a new title in Indiana it will prove legal owership of your vehicle. When purchasing a new vehicle you will need a title. If you give away a used car or you sell it you will need to do a title transfer.

Getting a title for a new vehicle:

In most cases the dealership where you bought your car will handle your title process. Click here if you wish to handle the title process on your own.

If you purchase a used vehicle or get one as a gift the title must be legally transferred into your name. This is done by getting the documents below and submitting them with the necessary fee to the county treasurer's office:

  • Get the title signed over to you and notarized. The title must include the federal odometer disclosure if the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  • If the title doesn't have the date of sale and selling price you will need a completed Bill of Sale signed by both the current and new owner and get it notarized.
  • An odometer disclosure statement if the title does not include this information and the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  • A damage disclosure Statement is required for vehicles less than eight years old.

Fees:

It all depends on the type of vehicle purchased.
