How to get a new title in Indiana


Getting a vehicle title is a certificate from the state that proves you legally own your vehicle and can drive it. When you purchase a new car you will need a new title in Illinois. When you give away or sell a used vehicle you will need to do a title transfer within 31 days of the date of sale.

If you get a used vehicle as a gift or you purchase one the title must be legally transferred into your name. This is done by getting the documents below and submitting them along with the appropriate fees to a BMV license branch:

  • Complete the application or certificate for a title.
  • The current title signed over to you and notarized. The title must include the federal odometer disclosure.
  • If the title does not indicate the date of sale and selling price get the a completed Bill of Sale signed by both current and new owner and get it notarized.
  • If the title doesn't have the odometer information make sure to include an odometer disclosure statement.
  • If you bout the vehicle in another state then a vehicle inspection number inspection is required which can be done at a BMV license branch for a small fee.
  • Provide your federal employee identification number and social security number.
