New Title and Title Transfers in California

How to transfer and get a new title in California

Having a title in California is proof on paper that legally gives you ownership to your vehicle. When you purchase a new vehicle you will need to have a title. If you sell your car or get it as a gift you will need to transfer your title within 10 days.

Usually, when you purchase a new vehicle from a dealership they will handle the title process. If you wish to handle the title process on your own you have that option.

Make sure to get the following documents and pay the associated fees for transfering a title.

  • The California Certificate of Title, signed by the seller, buyer and any other lien holder. The title must include the federal odometer disclosure, if the vehicle is less than ten years old.
  • Click here for the odometer disclosure form.
  • Click here for a smog certificate.
  • You may also be required to provide a bill of sale.

If you are selling your car you are required to notify the DMV of the sale within 5 days by completing the Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability form. This can be done online or downloaded and mailed to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability
P.O.Box 942859
