New Title and Title Transfers in Alaska

How to get a new and transfer title in Alaska

A title is a certificate issued by the state of Alaska that proves legal ownership of a vehicle. Anytime a new vehicle is bought or sold in Alaska, a title transfer must be completed. Whether the vehicle was a gift, or the owner died, the transfer must be done.

Titles for new vehicles

Typically, the licensed dealer that sold you your vehicle will pay the fees and submit the application documents for you. If you would like to do this on your own, read the Title and Registration FAQs documents on the Alaska Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division website.

Title Transfers on Used Vehicles:

Regardless of whether you have purchased a used vehicle or received one as a gift, you must transfer the title into your name within 15 days after the transaction. Gather together the following documents, and bring them to the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) near you, along with the proper fees:

  • Title Application
  • Current Title
The seller or donor must complete the parts that sign the title over to you. This must be notarized.
  • Bill of Sale
This must be signed by both owners and notarized. If your title has a spot to write the date of sale and selling price, you do not need to include a separate bill of sale.
  • Vehicle's Financing Statement/Security Agreement
The originals or copies are acceptable.

Fees:

Submit the following fees with your application package:

  1. Title Fee--$4
  2. Registration Fee--$8, but can vary
  3. Air Quality Research Fee--$1.50
  4. Vehicle License Taxývaries

To determine the exact amount you will owe, contact your local MVD office.

Title Transfers When Vehicle Owner Has Passed Away

The heirs to the deceased's estate will generally receive the vehicle, and the procedure for transferring the title is similar to the above. However, it is important to find out how the estate has been settled, as additional documents may be necessary. For more information regarding transfers of title in the case of a death, contact your local MVD office or call (800) 251-5866.
