New Title and Title Transfers in Alabama

How to get a new and transfer title in Alabama

Any vehicle purchased or received as a gift in the state of Alabama must have a certificate of title to prove legal ownership. Whether the vehicle is new, used, or received as a gift, a title transfer must be finalized. Also, if a vehicle owner passes away, the title must be transferred to the new owner.

Title for a New Vehicle

Typically, licensed dealers will submit the proper forms and fees for a customer when purchasing a new vehicle. If the customer wants to handle this process independently, they are free to do that. Refer to the Title and Registration FAQ document on the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) of the Alabama Department of Revenue website.

To Transfer a Title

Gift of Vehicle, or Sale/Purchase of Used Vehicle
Whether you have purchased a used vehicle, or someone has given you one as a gift, you have 20 days to transfer the title into your name. Gather together the following documents, and bring these and the fees required to your local MVD facility:

  1. Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin/Current Title
This document shows that ownership has been transferred to you.
  2. Bill of Sale
The bill of sale must be signed by both the current and the new owner.
  3. Registration Documents (if no title)
If the car does not yet have a title, you must provide proof that the vehicle has now been transferred to your ownership.

Fees

Submit the following fees with your documentation:

  1. Title Application Fee -- $15
  2. Handling Fee -- $1.50-$.300, depending on office
  3. Taxes ý These vary depending on where you transfer the title.

Contact the local MVD to determine the exact amounts that you will owe.

Title Transfer when Vehicle Owner Dies

When a vehicle owner dies, the vehicle is most often transferred to the heirs of the estate. However, ensure that no one else has been specified as the next owner in the deceased's will. Documents required and fees owed are similar to a normal title transfer. However, it is essential to find out how the estate has been settled. Sometimes the heir is required to complete an Affidavit for Assignment of Title. They may also need to provide copies of the death certificate and the will, if there is one. A notarized statement summarizing the will's contents is also acceptable. For more information, visit the Motor Vehicle Division section on the website, or contact your local MVD office.

Submission

All documents and fees should be turned in at the local MVD office.
