Current New Jersey residents are required to obtain a title on a newly purchased vehicle within 10 days of the vehicle’s purchase. If you are a new resident of New Jersey, you are granted 60 days from the day of your move to obtain a New Jersey title for your vehicle(s). When purchasing a vehicle from a private seller, the seller must complete the seller’s section of the title, provide their signature and provide the bill of sale.
You will then need to visit your local Motor Vehicle Agency to complete the transfer and provide the necessary documents. If you rebuild a car that was severely damaged in an accident, you will need to get a salvage title to operate the vehicle. If you are a new resident of the state, you will need to bring your out of state title along with your previous registration.
If you need to request a duplicate title after a lost or stolen New Jersey title, you can make your request in person or by mail. If you need to make any sort of correction, including a name change, you will need to visit your local office in person. You will also need to notify the New Jersey DMV of any address changes that you experience, but this is not required to be reflected on your title.
